It is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India attracting millions of devotees every year.

Choose the Best Way to Reach Mata Vaishno Devi Temple

By Air:

The nearest airport to Katra is Jammu Airport, officially known as Jammu Civil Enclave, located 50 km away. Jammu is well connected to major airports in India including Mumbai, New Delhi, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kolkata. Convenient cab and taxi services are easily available to reach the airport.

By Rail:

The nearest railway station to the temple is Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra Railway Station in Katra. Over the years, Katra has established good connectivity with major cities across the country, with regular train services. Tourists can find excellent accommodation facilities near the station. It is from here that the real movement towards Mata Bhawan begins. Pilgrims can either trek the 13-kilometer route or opt for helicopter services that operate helicopters from Katra to Sanjichhat.

By Road:

Regular bus services from all major North Indian cities are available to Jammu and Katra, as NH 1A passes through Jammu towards Srinagar. If traveling by road, whether through public or private transport, you can take a bypass from Kunjwani, about 10 km from Jammu, and head straight towards Katra (the base camp for the Mata Vaishno Devi trek). Various standard and deluxe buses of state road transport corporations and private operators connect Jammu with important North Indian cities and towns.

Mata Vaishno Devi Trek:

The trek route up to Mata Vaishno Devi is a well-maintained paved route with mild climb. On the way, pilgrims enjoy mesmerizing views of nature. The duration of the journey depends on individual speed, crowd density and weather conditions. Along the route, various colorful shops offer religious souvenirs and spiritual music. Ardhkuwari serves as the midpoint. Before Adhkuwari lies Indraprastha, where the path splits into two routes:

Old Route: Passing through Adhkuwari, it reaches Bhairav Ghati and descends to the holy building.

New Route: The new route is 5.5 km shorter than the old route and only electric rickshaws are allowed on this route.

Best Time to Visit Vaishno Devi

Peak Season

Vaishno Devi is open for pilgrims throughout the year, but the best time to undertake the journey is between the months of March to October. A lot of pilgrims visit Vaishno Devi between these months as the weather is cool and pleasant, but maximum visitors plan their trip during the Navratras.

Off Season

During the winters from November to February, the temperature reaches sub-zero levels and we recommend only the physically fit to visit at that time. The upside is that this is the time when the skies open up and Katra and the surrounding areas are cloaked in snow.
