FAQs

What is the significance of Shikharji in Jainism?

Shikharji, located in Jharkhand, is the most sacred pilgrimage site for Jains, where 20 of the 24 Tirthankaras (spiritual leaders) are believed to have attained moksha (liberation). It is also known as Parasnath Hill and holds immense spiritual value for both Digambar and Svetambar Jains.

How do I reach Shikharji?

The nearest airport is Birsa Munda Airport in Ranchi, about 200 km away, while the nearest major railway station is Parasnath Station, around 25 km from the base of the hill. From there, you can take taxis or buses to Madhuban, the base town for the pilgrimage.

What is the distance and difficulty of the Shikharji trek?

The trek is around 27 km (round trip), starting from Madhuban to the summit of Parasnath Hill. The path involves steep climbs and can take anywhere from 7 to 10 hours to complete, depending on the pilgrim's pace. Dolis (palanquins) are available for those who are unable to walk.

Is there an option for non-trekkers to visit Shikharji?

Yes, for those unable to trek, palanquin (doli) services are available for hire, where porters carry visitors up the hill. Alternatively, some pilgrims break up the journey over two days to make it more manageable.

What is the best time of year to visit Shikharji?

The ideal time to visit Shikharji is from October to March, when the weather is cooler and more comfortable for trekking. The monsoon and summer seasons can make the trek difficult due to rain or extreme heat.

Are there any accommodations available near Shikharji?

Yes, there are several dharamshalas (pilgrim guesthouses) and hotels in Madhuban that offer basic but comfortable accommodations. Some Jain trusts operate these guesthouses, and many provide simple Jain vegetarian meals.

What are the customs and guidelines for visiting Shikharji?

Pilgrims are required to follow strict vegetarianism, remove leather items (shoes, belts) before entering the temple premises, and maintain a respectful silence during the ascent. Modest clothing is required, and many pilgrims wear white clothes as a symbol of purity.

What kind of meals are available during the pilgrimage?

Jain vegetarian meals are provided at dharamshalas and local eateries. The food follows strict Jain dietary rules, excluding root vegetables, garlic, and onions. Pilgrims are advised to carry snacks and water for the trek.

How should I prepare for the Shikharji trek?

It’s important to be in good physical condition, as the trek can be strenuous. Wearing comfortable, non-leather footwear and carrying essentials like water bottles, snacks, and sun protection is recommended. Many pilgrims also mentally prepare by engaging in prayers or meditation before the journey.

Are there any special rituals or prayers performed during the trek?

Many pilgrims stop at various shrines and tonks (small temples) along the way to offer prayers. The climb is considered a deeply spiritual journey, and pilgrims often recite Navkar Mantra or other Jain prayers during the trek.

Is there a specific festival or time when Shikharji is most crowded?

Shikharji sees the most visitors during the Paryushan festival and around Mahavir Jayanti, when thousands of pilgrims make the trek to the summit. These times can be crowded, and booking accommodations in advance is essential.

Is Shikharji accessible to elderly or disabled pilgrims?

Yes, elderly or disabled pilgrims who cannot make the trek on foot can hire dolis (palanquins) to be carried up the hill by porters. The service is commonly used and available at the base of the hill in Madhuban.

Is photography allowed on the Shikharji trek?

Photography is generally allowed along the trek but not inside the temples or tonks. Always check for specific guidelines at each shrine before taking pictures.

How can I book a Shikharji pilgrimage tour?

Tours can be booked through Jain travel agencies or online platforms specializing in religious tours. Many packages include accommodation, meals, and guided assistance for the trek. It's advisable to book well in advance, especially during festival seasons.

Are there any health precautions to consider before the trek?

Due to the strenuous nature of the climb, it’s advisable to consult with a doctor if you have any pre-existing health conditions. Carrying necessary medications, staying hydrated, and taking breaks during the trek are important for a safe pilgrimage.
