Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha is set to commence the annual Amarnath Yatra by flagging off the first batch of pilgrims from the Bhagwati Nagar base camp in Jammu today, June 30.

The 62-day-long pilgrimage will officially begin on July 1 from the twin tracks of Nunwan-Pahalgam and Baltal. The traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route in Anantnag district is longer while the 14-km Baltal route in Ganderbal district is shorter but steeper. Over 3,500 pilgrims have already arrived in Jammu to proceed to Amarnath.

"The Yatra from Jammu will begin with the first batch of pilgrims being flagged off from Jammu base camp by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha tomorrow," an officer said, reported PTI.

He added that the Yatra will formally commence from the twin base camps of Baltal and Pahalgam on Saturday that is 1 July.

Stringent multi-tier security measures have been implemented at the Bhagwati Nagar base camp, and the convoy carrying the pilgrims will be safeguarded by CRPF troops, with the Army and police responsible for area domination.

As the chairman of the Shri Amarnath Shrine Board, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha visited the yatri niwas base camp on 29 June to oversee the arrangements for the pilgrims. He inspected facilities such as food and lodging, security measures, control rooms, langar stalls, registration counters, power and water supply, healthcare services, and sanitation. He also reviewed the facilities of transportation, deployment of health staff, fire tenders and emergency services. Sinha extended a warm welcome to pilgrims from all over the country.

The city administration established on-the-spot registration centres for unregistered pilgrims and sadhus. The registration process has commenced, with a dedicated centre for unregistered pilgrims in the Shalimar area and a special camp for sadhus at the Ram temple complex in Purani Mandi.

Over 3,00,000 pilgrims have already registered online for the Yatra.

“Pilgrims shall be provided RFID Tag at the registration centre itself which is mandatory with the pilgrims permit," the official informed.

Deputy Commissioner Avny Lavasa mentioned that 33 accommodation centres have been set up across Jammu, and Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags will be issued at the registration centres. Five counters have been designated for the Tatkal registration of pilgrims at Vaishnavi Dham, Mahajan Sabha, Panchayat Ghar and two at Geeta Bhawan and Ram Mandir for the registration of sadhus. The commissioner said, “All arrangements are in place and the district administration is on its toes to welcome the pilgrims."

Preparations

In preparation for the upcoming Amarnath Yatra, multiple langar committees have begun their preparations in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir. The langar committees are responsible for providing food and other essential services to the pilgrims during the yatra.

The committees have started arranging sheds, cooking resources, and gathering other necessary raw materials along the Jammu-Srinagar National Highway. This year, a total of 22 langars have been set up at different locations along the highway to cater to the needs of the pilgrims.
