Best Time to Go for Chardham Yatra

How to reach Chardham

By air:

The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. From here you can reach the Chardham ruins by car or helicopter.

Helicopter services are available from Dehradun to all four dhams, providing a faster and more comfortable journey.

By train:

Rishikesh and Haridwar are the nearest railway stations. Both railway stations are well connected to major cities in India.

Buses and taxis are available from here to reach the entire pilgrimage site.

By car:

Haridwar and Rishikesh are the main gateways to the Chardham Yatra. Both public and private buses as well as taxis are easily accessible.

Self-drive: Many pilgrims choose to drive themselves, but the roads are rugged and winding with mountainous paths. An experienced driver is essential.

Chardham Yatra Route

The traditional Chardham Tour follows a clockwise route:

    Haridwar → Barkot → Yamunotri → Uttarkashi → Gangotri → Guptkashi → Kedarnath → Joshimath → Badrinath → Haridwar

Each dham is accessible by road, except Kedarnath, which requires a 16-18 km trek from Gaurikund. Alternatively, helicopter services to Kedarnath reduce travel time.

Yatra Preparation and Essentials

Physical Fitness: The Chardham Yatra involves high-altitude travel and trekking, especially for Kedarnath. It’s advisable to start light exercise or walking at least a month before the journey.

Clothing:

Layered Clothing: Temperatures in the higher altitudes drop significantly, so carry warm clothing such as thermal wear, sweaters, jackets, and woolen socks.

Rain Gear: As weather can be unpredictable, carry raincoats or ponchos.

Footwear: Comfortable, sturdy shoes are a must, especially for the Kedarnath trek.

Travel Documents: Carry ID proof, medical insurance, and photocopies of important documents.

Medical Kit: Bring a first aid kit, medications for altitude sickness, pain relievers, and any personal medications.

Other Essentials: Sunscreen, sunglasses, water bottles, and energy snacks.

Accommodation

GMVN Rest Houses: The Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) provides affordable rest houses at all Chardham sites. Bookings can be made online.

Private Hotels: Numerous private hotels, guesthouses, and lodges are available, especially in towns like Uttarkashi, Guptkashi, Joshimath, and Badrinath.

Ashrams: Some pilgrims choose to stay in ashrams, which provide basic facilities and a serene environment.

Helicopter Pilgrimage

For pilgrims with limited time or health issues, helicopter services offer an efficient way to complete the Chardham Yatra. Helicopter tours typically depart from Dehradun and visit all four Dhams in 2-3 days.

Important Tips

Registration: Pilgrims must register for the Chardham Yatra, either online or at various registration centers en route.

Altitude Sickness: Some travelers may experience symptoms of altitude sickness, like headaches or nausea. Staying hydrated and acclimatizing at each stop is essential.

Road Conditions: Be prepared for winding and steep roads. Monsoons can bring landslides, so stay updated on road conditions.

Local Cuisine: Try the local Garhwali cuisine at rest stops. Food is usually simple, vegetarian, and light.
